We provide a curriculum of intellectually satisfying programs for people over the age of 50. Winter courses start on January 10th, 2012. A 6-week course is just $30. Three-week courses are $20. The yearly administrative fee of $25 has been dropped; students who paid the fee last Spring and in the Fall will be given credit toward their Winter or Spring 2012 course fee.

The Winter course schedule is available here

Wintertime – the perfect time to hibernate.  The hovering, constricting, clouds of gray squeeze out a drizzle of fog and rain. Dark mornings, dark evenings. We pay homage to the overwhelming desire to light the fireplace, brew the hot beverage, curl up under the afghan, and read the book we’ve coveted since summer.  The perfect Northwest winter?

NOT

Your Anacortes Senior College invites you to fight your inner bear.  Dig out that slicker, don those boots, and come to class.  We have an exciting collection of winter courses to counter your La Nina craving.

Two courses draw upon our island’s unique flora and fauna.  Brian Scheuch from the North Cascades Institute will instruct “Natural History of Skagit County,” an overview of our native plants, wildflowers, and four-legged creatures, in addition to our land & sea birds, their identification, migration, & feeding habits.

A three week course, “Croatian Fishing Families of Anacortes,” traces the migration of early immigrants from Croatia and the development of the local fishing industry. The class also includes a field trip to the historic homes of Anacortes.  Local author and historian, Bret Lunsford, leads this course.

Indulge your creative side with:

  • “Photography, advancing your skills with point and shoot cameras,” Joe Halton explains the art of creating better photos and photographic composition, along with organizing and processing photos on your computer.  +
  • “Priming the Pump: Guided Memoir Writing” with Teru Lundsten helps you in find the meaning of your life through writing your story and sharing it with others.
  • “Story Telling for the Young at Heart,” Jared McVay teaches the comforting, entertaining art of storytelling and assists you in bringing joy into the lives of others.
  • “Introduction to Poetry” with Perry Higman explores the works of European and American classical poets, as well as modern poets, in order to explain their continuing influence and their meaning in our lives today.

The World War II film series, “Why We Fight” is actually a call to fight. From director Frank Capra, these seven quasi-documentaries were an attempt by our War Department to summon the nationalistic spirit needed to sustain the military campaign against the expansionism of Germany and Japan.  Considered classic examples of wartime propaganda, these films were required viewing for American armed forces and were also shown in American civilian movie theatres.  Dr. Michael Newbrough, presenter.

Spanish I is the beginning course in learning the basics of conversational Spanish.  Class participation and regular attendance is essential.  Terry Kelly continues as instructor.

Spanish II is the intermediate level of conversational Spanish.  Terry Kelly opens this course to continuing students.

Indulge your scientific yearning with two courses: “The Joy of Science” with Dr. Jim Ford and “Chemistry in our Lives” with Dr. Gordon Crippen.  Jim Ford will acquaint his students with the major scientific personalities and their ideas, which have shaped our understanding and appreciation of our modern world. Gordon Crippen will discuss the central theme of chemistry and how it affects our daily lives – in industry, in medicine and in our kitchen.

All of our instructors donate their time in order to give us, their students, the ultimate senior college experience.  To all of them, we say, “thank you”.

Since the college began in 2007 more than 1,764 students have attended the courses offered.  Fall, 2011, saw our largest enrollment yet for one term – 220 students. We continually look forward to providing you with a variety of interesting, meaningful and fun courses.  Join us this Winter.

At Senior College we strive to make attending class an enjoyable experience for our students. Because we do not have books, tests or credit, we take the fear out of coming to class. We encourage students to listen to the instructor, engage in class discussion, and socialize with fellow students during the break.

Anacortes Senior College began in the Spring of 2007. We were fortunate to partner with the Anacortes School District, which allows us to use the classrooms in the Middle School.  Our age 50+ students have access to retired professors and other qualified instructors who come forward to share their knowledge.

Opportunities…

If you have an expertise or hobby you’d like to share, we encourage you to contact us and qualify as an instructor. If you are a student, we always appreciate your suggestions for additional classes that you’d like to see offered.
